Well I'm using the starting ship with starting weapons so that has something to do with it too. The ai isn't quite as tough in the starting missions of the single player game I've discovered. The game was stuttering a bit when I was trying multiplayer but it turns out it was because I was running my own server on the same pc I was running the game on. It's smooth in single player and probably smooth if you connect to a dedicated server.
