I have a small private server being hosted by multiplay.co.uk. I have 18 friends whitelisted to be allowed in, and there is rarely more than 2 or 3 logged in at a time. Last night a griefer managed to somehow bypass the whitelist, and destroyed some things. I have no idea how. I double-checked my server config, and everything *seems* okay. I am certainly not getting the 2-3 random griefers per day that I was accustomed to back in the days before I added a whitelist, so I am assuming this an unusual event.
Thunderstone Tools Of. This is a vanilla 1.0 server with no mods. I added a username ban and an ip ban, but I would feel a lot safer if I knew how it happened.
He was on the server for the last 2.5 hours before the automatic nightly backup, and as soon as that happened he disconnected. EDIT: Current theory is that he hacked my server's host (clanforge.co.uk), edited himself into the whitelist, and then edited himself out when he was done. EDIT: Well, now I feel stupid. I had my whitelist in whitelist.txt and whitelist=true in my server.properties. That worked in old versions, but apparently now it has to be white-list.txt and white-list=true in server.properties.
Quote from Was online mode set to true? Yep, I just double-checked. Online-mode=true EDIT: a little more information.
I was talking with some other users of my server, and they say they have seen variations of the griefer's username (leoj followed by a bunch of numbers) several times in the past few weeks, yet the only mention of him is that one 2.5 hour period last night. That probably means that he has been editing himself out of the log file. I think it is safe to assume that my server's host is hacked, and that the whitelist has not actually been bypassed. EDIT2: multiplay.co.uk tech support just told me that there is a known unpatched vulnerability that lets people past the whitelist.
